Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in eastern New Mexico, near the city of Clovis. The base is named after General John K. Cannon, a pioneer in the field of military aviation. It was originally established in 1942 as an Army Air Forces training base and has since evolved into a key location for Air Force special operations and combat support operations.
The base covers an area of approximately 3,789 acres and is home to the 27th Special Operations Wing, which is responsible for conducting special operations, including unconventional warfare, direct action, counter-terrorism, and personnel recovery. The 27th Special Operations Wing is equipped with a variety of aircraft, including the AC-130W Stinger II gunship, the MC-130J Commando II special operations transport, and the CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. These aircraft provide the wing with the capability to conduct a wide range of special operations missions in support of U.S. national security objectives.
Cannon Air Force Base also hosts the 318th Special Operations Squadron, which is responsible for training and equipping aircrew members for the special operations missions conducted by the 27th Special Operations Wing. Additionally, the base is home to the 33rd Special Operations Squadron, a flying unit that operates the MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle, providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support to special operations forces.
In addition to its special operations mission, Cannon Air Force Base also provides support for a variety of other Air Force units and activities. The base is equipped with a variety of support facilities, including medical, housing, education, recreation, and other services for the military personnel and their families stationed there.
