Eatonville, Florida is a historic town located in Orange County, just six miles north of downtown Orlando. Established in 1887, it holds the distinction of being one of the first all-Black, self-governing municipalities in the United States. The town played a significant role in the Harlem Renaissance, as several influential Black writers, artists, and intellectuals, including Zora Neale Hurston, called Eatonville home. Zora Neale Hurston, in particular, is closely associated with Eatonville and based many of her literary works on her experiences growing up in the town.
Today, Eatonville is home to around 2,000 residents and continues to celebrate its rich cultural heritage. The annual Zora! Festival is a major event that commemorates the life and work of Zora Neale Hurston and highlights the town’s contributions to African American history and culture. The festival features live music, arts and crafts, food vendors, and literary events that showcase the creativity and talent of the town’s residents.
Eatonville’s historic significance is also preserved through the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts, which is dedicated to celebrating African American art and culture. The museum features a collection of art, sculptures, and artifacts that reflect the town’s unique heritage and contributions to the wider African American community.
