Hinkley is a small unincorporated community located in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California. The town has a population of around 3,000 people, and it is situated along historic Route 66. Hinkley has gained national attention due to its association with the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the environmental contamination that occurred in the area.

One of the most notable events in Hinkley’s history was the contamination of its water supply by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. In the 1950s and 1960s, PG&E used a compressor station in Hinkley to pump natural gas through pipelines. This process resulted in the release of toxic chemicals, including hexavalent chromium, into the groundwater. As a result, the water supply became polluted, leading to numerous health problems for the residents.

The contamination in Hinkley gained widespread attention after the story was featured in the 2000 film “Erin Brockovich,” starring Julia Roberts. The film chronicled the true story of a legal case against PG&E on behalf of residents affected by the contamination. Ultimately, PG&E was forced to pay a $333 million settlement to the residents of Hinkley, and the company was required to clean up the area’s water supply.

Despite the settlement and cleanup efforts, the legacy of contamination still lingers in Hinkley. Many residents suffer from health issues related to the toxic exposure, and concerns about the long-term impact on the environment remain.

Today, Hinkley is a quiet and rural community with a mix of residential and agricultural areas. The town is surrounded by the vast desert landscape that is characteristic of the region. It is a place where residents have a strong sense of community and a deep connection to the land.

The town is also home to the Hinkley Airport, which serves as a hub for general aviation and provides local pilots with facilities for aircraft storage and maintenance. Additionally, Hinkley is located near attractions such as the Calico Ghost Town and the Mojave National Preserve, offering opportunities for outdoor recreation and tourism.
