Spadra is a small, unincorporated community located in Los Angeles County, California. It is situated on the southeastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley, just west of the city of Pomona. The area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people before being settled by Spanish missionaries in the late 18th century. The name “Spadra” is derived from the Spanish word “espada,” which means “sword.”

In the mid-19th century, Spadra became a prominent agricultural center, known for its citrus groves and vineyards. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1870s further bolstered the area’s growth, leading to the establishment of a thriving community with schools, churches, and businesses.

One of the most significant landmarks in Spadra is the historic La Casa Primera de Rancho San Jose, also known as the “Yorba-Slaughter Adobe.” Built in 1830, it is recognized as one of the oldest surviving residential structures in Los Angeles County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The adobe played a central role in the development of the region, serving as a stagecoach stop and trading post for travelers and settlers.

Despite its rich history, Spadra’s prominence began to decline in the early 20th century due to urbanization and the shift of the agricultural industry to other parts of California. The community gradually lost its independent identity and was absorbed into the neighboring city of Pomona.

Today, Spadra is primarily a residential area with a mix of historic homes and modern developments. While it may no longer be a bustling agricultural hub, the community remains a charming and vibrant part of the San Gabriel Valley. Its residents enjoy easy access to the amenities and attractions of Pomona, including the Fairplex event complex and the prestigious California State Polytechnic University, as well as the natural beauty of nearby parks and recreational areas.

Spadra may be small, but its rich heritage and close-knit community make it a special place to call home in Southern California.
